Hawk is DONE!

Wednesday was an unbelievably exciting day for our family, as the Hawk had her sixth and final chemotherapy treatment. She started them back in November, and has had them every three weeks. Fortunately she didn’t experience any major side effects after her first three treatments. In fact, during the first two, she noticed that the anti-nausea medication she was given to take in the days following actually caused more negative side effects than the chemo itself! After the third treatment she chose to scrap the anti-nausea meds, and she was fine. However, after her fourth treatment, she felt a tad sick for a couple of days, and after her fifth, she felt sick for a few more days. This time around she’s also feeling a little nauseous, but she is so elated at being done that it doesn’t seem to be bothering her that much.

The doctors have said she looks good and is healthy, and it reminds me again how fortunate we are that this was caught so early. Ovarian cancer is called the silent killer, because it is rarely found until it is too late, and it is hardly ever detected in Stage 1. The Hawk has reminded us several times to know and monitor our own bodies – very good advice that I will take to heart, since she found the growth herself, and was the one to bring it to her doctor’s attention.

This has been a scary time for our family, but as Naan said, it’s really brought out the good in the people in our lives and we are extremely grateful to have such a loving and close-knit family. The Hawk has also been such an inspiration to not only us but to those around her, as she has had such a positive outlook throughout this whole ordeal. I can only hope, that if I ever have to go through something like this, I can be half as upbeat as her.
